In 1884, there were widespread disturbances in Korea. At this time there were two parties in Korean politics – the pro-China party and the pro-Japan party. China was embroiled in European problems. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Japan helped Korea. As a result, relations between China and Japan became tense. In 1894, there was a rebellion again in Korea. Korea appealed to China for help. According to the agreement of 1884 AD, it was mutually decided between China and Japan that if there is a need to send troops to Korea, both nations would send their prior information to each other. Following the agreement, China reported military assistance to Japan. In response, Japan sent a force of 8,000 soldiers to Korea.

Japan thought that after the defeat of China, Korea would now be dominated by it, but contrary to expectation, now Russia was increasing its influence in place of China. Now there are two parties in Korea, the supporter of Russia and the supporter of Japan. The Queen of Korea was not in favor of Japanese reforms, so on October 7, 1895, the Queen was killed. At such a time, Russian influence in Korea began to increase. There was also an agreement between Russia and Japan on the question of Korea, but Russia continued to increase its influence by disregarding the agreement. On February 5, 1904, the war between Russia and Japan started. Ultimately, Russia was defeated and the Treaty of Portsmouth was concluded between the two. According to the treaty, Japan's paramount political, military, and economic interests in Korea were accepted. This paved the way for Japanese imperialism in Korea.

Why North Korea and South Korea are separated?

Since US policy towards Korea during World War II was aimed at preventing the domination of Korea by a single power, it can be reasonably concluded that the main reason for the partition was to stop the Soviet advance south of the 38th parallel.

After the Second World War, when the vast empire of Japan went from him. Korea was also divided into two parts at the 38th latitude. Russia had an influence on North Korea and America on South Korea.

On June 25, 1950, the communist government of North Korea invaded South Korea supported by the US. At a council meeting on June 25, it was decided that the United Nations would provide assistance to South Korea to repel the invasion and establish international peace. On July 7, 1950 AD, the joint army of 16 member states of the union was prepared under the command of American General MacArthur. In October 1950, the United Nations forces pushed the North Korean army north of the 38° parallel. After this, the forces of the Union continued to move further north. In response, the forces of Communist China crossed the Yalu River and chased the Union forces up to the 38° parallel line. In February 1953 AD, the Union declared China an aggressor but did not take any action against it because it was aware that taking action against China would lead to the expansion of the war. On July 10, 1951, a treaty was signed between the two sides. A commission of 5 members was appointed about returning the prisoners of war. On July 27, 1993, along with the cease-fire treaty, the proceedings of the union were also terminated.

On July 25, 1894, Japanese submarines blocked the passage of a ship named 'Kosing' sent by China, as a result, in August 1894, a formal war started between China and Japan. China was defeated in the war and under the 'Treaty of Shimonoseki' which concluded on April 17, 1895, China recognized Korea's complete independence along with accepting other conditions. Thus ending the influence of China in Korea.

pre-war situation Korean war

The peninsula was ruled by the Korean Empire before being annexed by Japan following the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. After the end of World War II in 1945, it was divided into the occupation zones of the Soviet Union and the United States. North Korea refused to participate in elections held in the South in 1948 under the supervision of the United Nations. This resulted in the formation of separate Korean governments in the two occupied territories. In North Korea, the government of the People's People's Republic of Korea was formed under the leadership of the Korean Communists. And in the southern part, the democratic government of the Republic of Korea of several parties was formed, which was headed by Syngman Ri. Ri was anti-communist and wanted to form an alliance with Chiang Kai-shek to prevent the spread of communism. Both North and South Korea claimed sovereignty over the entire peninsula, which culminated in the Korean War in 1950. The fighting ended after the 1953 armistice, but the two countries are still officially at war.

In the last days of World War II, it was decided among the Allies that after the Japanese surrender, the Soviet army would guard North Korea up to the 38th latitude and the  united nations forces would guard the south of this line. The two powers established a joint commission to establish a "final Korean democratic government". But on June 25, 1950, North Korea attacked South Korea. On the same day, taking advantage of the Soviet absence in the Security Council, America got other members to declare North Korea as an aggressor. The Security Council recommended that members of the United Nations provide the necessary assistance to the Republic of Korea to counter armed aggression and establish peace and security in the region. For the first time, on July 7, 1950, under the command of American General Macarthur, the Joint Command was formed under the flag of the United Nations. After the suppression of communist supporters in Seoul, the then-leader of North Korea, Kim Ul-Sung, opened a front against South Korea. Kim Ul-Sung was the grandfather of the current ruler of North Korea, Kim Ul-Jong.

But the Soviet Union later started participating in the action of the Security Council and used "Veto" to stop the action of the United Nations in Korea. As a result, on November 3, 1950, the General Assembly took responsibility for international peace and security by passing the "Unity Resolution for Peace".

A few months after the start of the war, China began to fear that the American army might move toward its borders. So he decided that he would defend his partner North Korea in this fight. American soldiers had to suffer more losses after the Chinese soldiers opened the front. The number of his casualties increased. Although the Chinese soldiers did not have the best weapons, their number was very large. It was necessary to cut off North Korea's supply lines from China and the Soviet Union.

After this, General Douglas MacArthur decided to implement his war policy of 'burning the earth'. From that moment on, American B-29 and B-52 bombers began hovering daily over the cities and villages of North Korea. There was a deadly napalm load on these fighter planes. Napalm is a type of flammable liquid used in war. This also caused a lot of infamy for General Douglas MacArthur but these attacks did not stop. Soon after the US action, the cities and villages of North Korea began to turn into rubble.

India's role in the Korean War?

It was only in June 1953 that it was possible to bring the two sides together despite India's tireless efforts. According to the formula prepared by KPS Menon (Krishna Menon), the Indian ambassador and the chairman of the United Nations Commission on Korea, the prisoner of war was agreed upon and the formula for the exchange of soldiers taken prisoner in the war could be prepared. Which was accepted by the United Nations and the Soviet bloc after Stalin's death. A release commission of neutral countries was formed under the chairmanship of Indian General Thimayya. Under his supervision, an Indian "guarding party" prepared to undertake the difficult task of securing the release of the soldiers.

The Korean War also proved to be a test of India's faith in non-alignment and its faith in peace, which stood true. It faced Chinese and Soviet opposition due to India calling North Korea an aggressor. India had to face the wrath of America for refusing American intervention in the war and not considering China as an aggressor. In 1950, China invaded Tibet and annexed it without any special effort. And India had to remain silent.

What is unique about Korean culture?

Korean values include obedience to the family, hard work, protection of the family, and proper decorum among family members, and are still important in the modern world. Waiting to be introduced at social gatherings is important. Bowing is a traditional way of greeting.

When did Korea split?

When Japan surrendered during World War II, in 1945 AD, according to the Yalta Treaty, this country was divided into two parts by the 38 north latitude line.
